Has Amelia Earhart’s Plane Been Found?
Has Amelia Earhart’s plane been found?
I’ve been doing a bit of reading on historical events in aviation this month. Certainly one of the great unsolved mysteries is that of the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. A wide variety of theories have endured throughout the years as to what really happened. Speculation ranged from their running out of fuel and ditching in the Pacific Ocean to having made an emergency landing on an island only to be captured by Japanese military forces.
A South Carolina firm, Deep Sea Vision (DSV) is a marine robotics company dedicated to deep sea survey and exploration. Well-known for its commitment to the search for Amelia Earhart's aircraft, Deep Sea vision utilized a modified HUGIN 6000 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to search over 5,000 square miles of the ocean floor for three months. It appears that their efforts just may have succeeded in locating the missing Lockheed Electra some three miles beneath the surface.
